This might be a stupid question, but what is the point of shooting fox early season when they aren't prime. I've had terrible luck the last two years because I prefer to wait. All of the gamelands are hit up already and call shy. Maybe its just me, but I dont see the point. I would hate to think people just toss them.

That is a good question, here were I live we got guys that do the same, they are number guys, they DO NOT care about fur harvest.Just how many they kill. Not saying it is wright or wrong, everyone has there own thing.JMO,Pred100x.

There are some people that just like to hunt and are not interested in prim fur for the money. Do not get me wrong the money makes it nicer. But money is real low on the reasons why I hunt. I have hunted fox when I could not hardly find a fur buyer to take them. It have hunted them when they were worth a lot of money in the past. When I was a young man trapping and calling helped a lot at Christmas, but in truth a real job pays better and is not as hard if you want money. The early red fox will bring you just about as much as fully prim fur any anyway. Color is more important.
The guy that get the most fur starts early. As the season goes on they keep getting less.
Just enjoy hunting and do not think about prim fur or money. It takes the fun out of hunting.

I can only speak for myself, but I like to hunt early season for a couple reasons: First of all, there is less pressure and I can usually call the dumb ones in before every one else is out there educateing them. Secondly, I enjoy calling for the sport of it. Even if I don't get to shoot, I still get just as much enjoyment out of watching them come in to the call. Third, ....Yes I do sell the furs, but I realistic don't make any money at it. I have to say I don't even make enough to pay for my gas. But I can usually have more success in early season which is les frustrateing and keeps me pumped up and excited to get out there more often.

I was just curious. I make probably negative money predator hunting. I call in little and miss alot, lol. I got a grey fox mounted and last year I got a big red, but he had mange. I had a family of reds picking off my chickens this summer, but they are gone now. I did score on a cat few years ago, but my kid let the dog in the garage and she worked it over good. So bad luck follows me. I would like to get one of each mounted.
I really enjoy just getting out. Maybe next year I'll start earlier.

Shadowchaser, The key is to hunt for the sprot and to have fun at it! If you're like the rest of us, DO NOT add up how much money you have invested in calls, gas money, snow camo, regular camo, guns, etc, you'll quickly realize it's not a profitable sport, but it sure is fun!!!

I really just need to find some more places. I have called in 0 this year.

Hang in there and stick with it. Try and hook up with other members in your area and go out with them to learn some new tactics. It'll come.

I'm a liar...I did call in and miss a yote right before deer season. Found out my .223 was almost a foot high at 100 yds for some reason.

O-my O-my
I knew fishermen lie, but a predator hunter this has to be the fist!!!
-
Sad part is I don't have to lie about fishing as I usually do really well. I should start superimposing myself with huge lots of fur.....and really hot women.
-
Yep! you must be a fisherman to come up with this stuff. By the way I am a professional photo Grapher. I'll help you with interviewing those girls for them girly pictures. :)

Deal, I'll start checking out the local dive bars and birth control clinics.

yep you ruined my idea.
I just sold my camera

sc asks-
...what is the point of shooting fox early season when they aren't prime
China is buying early Reds at high prices, the past few years. The market is wide open, if you started early, you will be rewarded. But it's too late this season to start early.
Stay abreast of the fur market and hunt for fun and moo-la. Only makes sense and cents.
For the most part, early Reds have always been saleable. That fact alone will not deter most fur harvesters.
In my area, Greys and Coyote prime a bit faster than Reds, so early goods are saleable.
sc, I guess I should ask a question...
What do you consider 'early season'?
a) 1st 2 weeks?
b) 1st month?
c) other?
I personally have a blast and tons of fun calling predators and keeping a production aspect ($$$) adds to keen thinking, knowing critters, in-season scouting, having plans, lots of territory and such. A bit more involved than the hobby guy. I love it, have fun and sometimes think of it as a part-time job. A job I love.
My methods come from my background. We all have an agenda with our lives. And our lives change.
Trapping fur was a part of young life for me and my brother, money went to the household fund..lol.
Teenage, I began calling to add more fur. As I went out on my own and married, fur checks paid for our children & family's Christmas presents. Fur checks help paid the rent, heat, insurance and groceries over the years. Back in those years of a 'reliable fur income' that wife and I depended on, I certainly had to take a business/production look at fur harvesting. I had a lot to learn. (Confucius say: Man who knows everything, has a lot to learn)
Now that I'm a senior citzen, I don't rely on fur checks, but still call and trap with a plan to maximize my time to produce the most fur which equals more cash.
We all have our own agenda. It's a long season start when you want.
My best to all.

Hern,
Thanks for the detailed response. I asked a simple question and your response was very well put. Again thanks.
