Thanks Bud...made a dozen sets today with no luck...but it was great to stretch the legs....the wind was tough also...did find a few good deer snd duck spots..so the day was nt wasted....Russ

It always good finding new spots for a new adventure in the woods!
The wind had been pretty tricky around here too I'm gonna wait for a calmer night to get back out. Hope you get back out soon and drop some fur.

Well we made it out yesterday early morning....with a buddy up from Florida..did nt call in much..but 3 hawks and a huge flock of crows.Did find tracks in the snow from a big black bear and scat....perfect morning....Im headed to the farm this evening...if there s any place where i ll get my first fox its this farm...Rusty

What sounds are you using?
-
Well i whiff on my first fox.....caller was 75 yards from me in a farm water drain....I was useing cottontail distress and jackrabbit....starting each set with high volume and then turning it low....the fox approach down wind from me st 175 yards...hitting it with the Noxx killer light ...he was sneeking the whole time.....he was anout 40 yards from the caller...layed my crosshairs on his head and thoughtI made a good shot....but couldnt find him....went this morning no luck...I should have waited another 30 yards closer...but it was exciting! Im hooked now cant wait to get back out there...I ll be more patient nexttime....

just a silly question ... but may not be that silly .. i noticed in a previous post you said you were using a kill light .. and also you had the caller some distance away from you .the light tells me your hunting at night . I dont know if this method is common practice or not as i was taught one way and always stuck to it . .. night hunts you always keep your caller right in front of you as you will only light up the eyes if there looking right at you cause thats where there ears say to look.. which allows you to scan a large area and see emm coming . verses just a small narrow one ... they will be looking at the caller as thats where the sound is coming from .. not yourself ... where the light is coming from . hence cutting down your reaction time and also the chance of doubles and so forth .. I may have read the post wrong or just be in my own old world so dont take take it the wrong way .

Hey np Jim....i had the caller 75 yards from me....too far after..i thought about it.....would turn volume 75%.......and run it for a few mins......scan the 2 fields i was working out of.....when i see red eyes...scan light off....volume cutdown..50%...kill light on rifle lites him up.....if he continues to move into my direction...volume goes down......low....he gets into my range and i pull the trigger...I don t like having the caller against me ever...i put it out hopeing the fox will walk by me zeroing on the sounds and not me.....Ive had goodluck..but i am a rookie....but will take you sugguestions and ideas.....cause i am learnng....Rusty

Always learning. I guess it really depends on the field situation . The fields I set up on are pretty pressured and also narrow with rises and dips . The dogs won't run in . They run down the hedge rows if they even come out . My only option is to catch emm before they wind me . It is a bit unnerving sitting in the dark making yourself the target . But I've found that even the ones I didn't see and busted me were 75 yards away . He screamed at me and took off. I set up once in a small opening in a hedgerow between 2 fields . Was a nice warmer night . I was calling and a buck sneaked up behind me and snorted down my neck . Talk about getting the blood pumping ! I fell off my chair . My partner was about 15 yards away watching it unravel . And then he couldn't stop laughing . Then he started yelling . Don't shoot ! It's a deer ! Man I wanted to shoot that donkey in the ass ! Lol . Never the less , now I always back myself up against the heavy brush . Now the the snow fell And rifle season is almost over ill be doing day hunts . Set up as you are . Except with a mojo decoy .
You just can't beat the excitement of a night hunt tho .

The foxs here live in a good size area...they travel the farm roads threw my field..comming out of a 20+acre woodlot.....corn fields on both sides of the rd and you have to becareful of safety zones...so im limited to shooting them in certain areas....don t want to get neigbors mat at me..Rusty
-
I see . Didn't notice you were in the lower half of 5c . You got some tight areas down there . I'm in the upper half of 5c . Little more open .
-
Yea it is alittle tight....but some great predator hunting...coyote was trapped by a buddy of my in last year in this area ...so it can happen...I do hunt the upper 5c also ..right into bucks county...I started hunting day time and still do...but got better responces at night...either time...just love bring out there and im ussally hunting alone...Rusty
-
Well i'm headed out tonight finally...my buddy may join me if not..we'll do it alone...It will be my first snow covered predator hunt ..so i'm excited to see what happens...this area is a travel area for foxes in the area..it's a farm field that they use in between fields...so i can pretty much sit and wait...but i'm not one for doing that...so i'll set up the caller closer to me tonight and i'll be useing some rabbit scent to step it up ..rabbit scent and sounds you can't beat it....so i'm expecting some close encounters tonight...Rusty
-
Well...no shots tonight...went alone once again....moon was high and it lit the fields up.....I did nt like it but still hunted...alot of tracks in the fields....wind was perfect...set the caller up...first 15 mins big red shows about 130 yrds....does nt stay even after useing squeeker....2hrs later...another Red shows his eyes along treeline...stays for 2 mins...walks away....we all know what that means so we ll backing off of the spot ..Otherwise it was fun...cold did nt bother me and the pocket warmers were toasty.
