Title: Kill light colors
Post by: sw-nightstalker on November 22, 2013, 05:57:19 PM
I have a red coyote TLR kill light with a red LED. My buddy has killed a coon and a coyote with my kill light. He has just purchased a TLR light with a green LED. Has anyone used a green kill light? How does it compare to the red kill light? Range? Brightness? Any information will help. We will be heading out next Friday for some more hunting.

I have a green light from Stik and shoot.  The range is about average, but I don't care for the brightness and color.  I don't use it any more.  I stick to red.

predators see green much brighter than red.  It's kinda like using a white light imho.

I hunted with a kid who had a green kill light. We called a grey fox in and it didn't seem to bother it enough that we couldn't have killed it if we wanted to.

However..

The green light is so bright and intense that it messes with your night vision. It kind of shocks your eyes the same way you would feel if I shined a bright white light in your face on a dark night.

I'm a believer in red lights too.

Guys I know down south hunt hogs at night with green kill lights.  But I agree with alphadawg it messes with your night vision. I've seen foxes called in with all color lights, white, green and red. I've always had better results with red lights. I use the absolute least amount of light going into my night sets that I can get away with safely, and once setup, I usually sit in complete darkness for 15 min before beginning the set.

You will always pick up eye glare, but protect your night vision and you will identify your target much sooner.

I cant say one spooks the prey more then the other .. I just know I like to keep my natural night vision .  with green I have to wait for my eyes to adjust .. red works out great .
