Title: Keg hold for beaver
Post by: Posty40 on February 27, 2013, 08:07:18 PM
I have a chance to trap a creek for beaver over the next few weeks. Can I use leg hold traps set in the paths they have made coming out to feed? Something like a #2. Is this legal on shore and will it hold a beaver. My little bit of research found some people said don't even try. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Id go with a #3 or #4 set 5-6 inches under the water to catch a back foot.
Front foot catches on beaver can be bad news as far as wring offs go

Set where they'd put their back feet down when their chest hits land.
#2's aren't big enough.
There are many options here, keep us posted

Picked up a #5 from Johnsons Fur today along with some castor lure and a drowning wire. Heading out Saturday to set. Will see.

If you make a castor mound set and are putting castor lure at it, remember that they will most likely be walking on their hind legs as they approach.
Now I can't wait for Sundays check

Trap was set off this am...and moved from original spot. Must have got away or barely missed. Will set again along with a few new ones and just keep trying. There seems to be new castor mounds in the area, is there a specific time of year they make these? I mean there is like 70 mounds in about a 1 acre area bordering the creek.

Any hair in the jaws?
Is the trap deep enough that they won't hit it with their chest?
Yes usually in march they really advertise with castor mounds.

What set are you using?

I am using a drowning set with a #5 leg hold attached to a drowning wire. The trap sits along the shore in about 5 inches of water. I have not had a chance to reset it after all this rain. I will wait until the water level drops back to normal. A mound is made along the bank about 2 feet from the trap and a couple dabs of castor scent was put on the mound. I have never trapped for beaver before and you have been very helpful Leglifter.
There are litteraly 70 mounds made in this property's yard that runs along the creek. Every fruit tree has been chewed off and the owner wants the animal gone. Thanks again.

You'll get them
When you do reset , try to remember how deep and how far back so if you get a miss you know how to adjust and when you connect you can analise how.
If you've had your mound there and no trap set, they may have worked it every night and could possibly be bored with it.
You might want to try a different brand of castor when you reset or a bigger mound with no lure.

Pulled Sunday morning with no sucess. I will have to check on the #5 being legal. I'm surprised Jerry would sell me one if it wasn't. I told him what I was after and where. If I'm wrong then my bad.

Yikes. I'm not sure I want to be at hunting camp for a week with you guys.  :)
I live in Mechanicsburg on the Enola side, almost right behind Armitage Golf Cource. I could use the assistance when it comes to Beaver trapping. I was pretty satisfied with my success on Reds (4) and coons (8) this year as it was my first year trapping. My hunting buddy and I called in like 25 fox at night over the FoxPro as well. But at 50 years old I still have a lot to learn and would welcome a day out .

Well I live on the opposite side of Mechanicsburg and graduated high school in Enola.  Everything I know about beaver I learned from Bob.  Unfortunately for us or fortunate for Bob he lives on the other side of the State.  If you know where there are some, I can teach you what Bob tought me........Tim

I appreciate the offer, that is very kind. I will take you up on that next year. How about a crow hunt on the 6th or 7th? I hit a small farm up in Dauphin every so often, got three last Saturday in an hour or so.

Might take you up on that.  Let me check the schedule and get back to you.  Is there room for two teenage boys?
