Title: The fisher
Post by: Buckwheat on February 05, 2013, 05:33:19 PM
The more I read and learn in the woods about this critter the more I think I dislike them. They sean to kill everything!  I think they may be worse then a coyote. They may not kill adult deer but I think they would fawns. It seans there are some spots that I use to hunt that had gray fox and coyotes and now have nothing except for a few deer.  We possibly have a new problem in our state up north that is not talked about or noticed by any one but me and a few close friends. Could it be the fisher?

I've heard through the grapevine that fishers are just as if not harder on springtime fawns then coyotes. I've also been told to kiss small game like rabbits and grouse goodbye.
Fishers are bad news is what I've heard...

I know, I have been watching and listening for a wile. I is hard to spot the damage since this type of stuff spreads slow across the state. I read were one state released them in hopes of killing off coyote pups. Our state released them and said they will kill off the porcupines. They do eat porcupines, but i think when there is nothing else left to eat.  Just look the pgc just opend up a season on porcupines,  so much for them doing a good job eating porcupines.
You know they were wiped out for a reason and I do not think is was for there fur value as led to believe. The old guys hated them for a reason and I think we are starting to see why.

There is a bait pile on the Tuscarora Mtn. where they are supposedly studying Eagles....the camera trap caught a Fisher visiting the bait....so their not just in the north anymore. I think this was on a News 8, Jack Hubley segment not to long ago..

They are spreading out pretty quick. But the results from them in an area is spreading slow for us to pick up on what they might be affecting.

Are they paired up this time of year? I found a pile of tracks running up and all around a rocky power-line this morning. I would think, without knowing their specific habits, that they have a den on the power-line somewhere and are sticking close by to it . . ??

They do not paire up as othere critters. They only mate a few days after having her young in around march. I would think you found a place with a few active fishers.

I called one in last sunday when I was out for bobcat. I thought it was one of the coolest things i had ever called in. Knowing what I know I am kind of kicking myself in the but for not feeding it a 40gr. V-Max (I wouldn't really there is no hunting season for them).

A side story on this...several years ago my wife and I went for a two week vacation to VT. and then Conn.  while we were in Conn. (my wife for pictures, me for fishing) we stopped at a small ice cream place..While we were there the lady scooping sent one of her kids to catch "the cat" who had appeared in the yard..We laughed!  She got very serious...they had seen a Fisher Cat (that's what locals called them) and pet cats were going missing. She advised us that if we crossed paths with one to be cautious...as they were unpredictable and feared very little....I never saw one fishing there or hunting in Maine or New Brunswick but I have seen their little cousin the Pine Marten several times and they have attitude and think their 5X as big as they are...if they ever got a foothold here gray squirrels would go extinct...I watched one chase down one of those hyper squirrels they have in the north one time, it was remarkable.. 8)

Just think the only thing fast enought to catch and kill the super fast squirrel eating pine martin is a fisher that also eats squirrels and can catch and kill the pine martin. :o

Just think what they are doing to our turkey population.  All the effort that went into getting it to where it is now, then stock a 15 lb animal that runs at night, eats meat and climbs like a squirrel.

They could easily follow a flock of youg turkeys and take one every night.

Not to mention the grouse and rabbits.
