I was gonna get a 204 but that seems to be almost pointless since I already have a 22-250... What's a bump up from a .17 hmr but under 22-250. Mainly lookin to use it for fox, I wound to many with 17 :-\

.222 seems to fit your limits or any of the .17 variants (i.e. .17rem, .17 fireball, .17 hornet).
-
22 Hornet
-
Guess ill have to go to grices and just see what all the options are, maybe find a deal that will make my mind for me
-
I always liked the 223. Great varmint, predator, and deer caliber.
-
I see you said mainly for fOX.Although I love the hmr for fox I respect your decision to make a change.22 hornet,17 fireball,17 hornet are all in the sweet spot for FOX.
-
I have gone to the CZ American 527, in .22 hornet and .222, but i lean to the hornet.
-
The 22 Hornet is hard to beat for fox hunting.

Well I may have went a little bigger then I needed but, I couldn't pass it up, ive wanted one for a long time savage 204 white camo! So ill ask this, will a 32 gr bullet do less fur damage then a 45 gr? Or vice versa.

I never used the 45 grain but have used the 32 grain. The 32 grain in my experience will do a lot of damage to fox. I spent a hours sewing up foxes as a consequence.

If you don't want to tear up the pelt too much than use a heavier more solid bullet. Lighter bullets fragment faster and will blow them critters up real bad, especially since your gun is shooting 4000fps.

Shot 3 Reds last year at 100 to 125 yaeds w/ my Savage Mod 25 .204. 3 became 6. My load was FL Hornady 32 grs. My Ruger #1 w/40 gr FL's was just as bad. I got a Rem Mod. 7 -17 Fireball but haven't had a shot yet. Dick PS A lot of fur hunters luv the 17's up to Coyotes. I will pay attention to them about this and will report back after I get some shooting.

Do they make a harder thicker shelled bullet I could load? I've always wanted something small and fast and I paid a lot of money for it so I hope i can find something that won't shred every critter I shoot!
-
The 204 would probably work if you do some hand loading. Get a good load book and find a recipe that is slower in velocity. I've had excellent results with reduced 223 loading. In my experience, I find that soft points or hollow points are the best on fur. The plastic tipped varmint bullets are very violent and can result in big holes. I find that 700 ft lbs of muzzle energy is the threshold for maximum energy for fur friendly fox shooting. Factory 204 ruger loads can be up to 1300 ftlbs. .

Not to hijack the thread but my brother just bought a .223 for coyote hunting. He's wanting me to make some reloads for him. What's you recipe foxfx?
-
Use psp they wont blow up

Where did I hear that before?
