I'm thinking of getting my bob cat permit this year. Anyone have any idea the best WMU to goto?
-
2G has a lot of cats.
-
I got mine last year in 4D. I plan to trap some there again this year and do some calling if I can't find one to trap. Last year I got lots of trail camera pictures of them. This year I haven't got any but my cameras haven't been out since a week or so before deer season. After deer season, I plan to put a couple on some trails where I thing bobcats might be traveling if they are around.
-
Got mine for the first time this year, just wish they were in on Sundays like fox and yotes. My luck I'll be out on a Sunday and have a cat come in.
-
I thought they were any hour day or night. but then again Im usually wrong 90% of the time and the other 12% dont matter.
-
You are not allowed to hunt cats sunday. Trapping is fine tho
-
Page 73 of the book states "bobcats may be hunted any hour, day or night, except during the regular antlered or antlered/anterless deer seasons."
I also looked at the PA Game Comission site and it doesn't state anything about not hunting for them on sunday. It does state it for possum, skunk, and weasel.
I don't see where it says you can't hunt them on sunday. If I am missing something I'd like to know since I have always thought you could hunt them on sundays.
-
Called them (game commision) last week and was told that you can't hunt them on Sundays, reason I called was on page 73 of regs. it states that fox and yotes can be hunted on Sundays, and coon can't but doesn't really say anything about cats, hope this helps and maybe they should clarify it a little better.
-
This is the reason for a good portion of violations. They really just need to open hunting up on sunday anyways.
-
I few terms ago our president looked into changing the language in the book to allow bobcat hunting and coon on Sundays . The biologist stated that the cat population was not strong enough to support it. And they also said that it would be in advisable to fight for coon on Sundays because it would be a waste of our time
-
its good to have a group like ours that can decipher the laws when the actual lawbook can't.
-
I think it spells it out in the game code. I'll take a look at home tonight
-
I agree Sunday hunting for should be legal for all furbearers. I know of a certain unnamed person ;) who one time shot a coon at 1am Sunday morning while he was out red lighting. It wasn't until a time later that this person ;) realized that this actually wasn't legal. You can dispatch a coon in a trap, but can't shoot them on Sundays. I mean.... what on earth moved them to allow fox hunting on Sunday and not other critters. The PGC is not very consistent with their laws. And why is there a crow season and laws about which days of the week you can shoot em?
-
I believe crows are governed as federal just as waterfowl is.
as far as coon hunting on sundays, I wonder if it has something to do with coon hounds baying at night, granted, a rifle shot at a fox or coyote would be sure to wake the farmer up at night.
Its hard to say who they had in mind when drafting the rules, or what group petitioned, for what reason as they were being thought of.
-
I had the same thought on the dogs, but then you can hunt yotes on sunday with dogs.

Ppha needs to lobby for a change at the next pgc meeting. If I was more than a district rep I would consider doing it.
-
Mike, You don't have to be an officer to do that. In the past we've asked if there were any members that were interested in doing something like and their were no takers. You must have missed that one. We are always looking for any volunteer help that we can get, so If your interested please feel free to lobby the PGC. In fact if you are truly interested I'm sure you could be our go to guy for lobbying the PGC on issues related and of interest to us. You can be the eyes and ears of the PPHA at the meetings and watching out for our interests. It's really good of you to volunteer for this Mike and I'm sure the rest of the members will be happy that a guy of your caliber is handling this.
-
The first step would be to contact the pagc biologist and see if a change would be possible in his opinion Mike what do you mean by your statement. "If I were more than a district rep"? All officers are equal. Actually a district rep has more voting power than the president
-
If I run for president or vice president next year which I am not planning, I would do this function. I was on the board for another hunting group and the expected the president or vp to speak at the pgc meetings on behalf of the organizaiton. It just holds alot more clout to the way the commissioners receive requests. It is just the way it is...a Harrisburg thing.
Maybe I will organize a PPHA membership writing campaign in the Spring. I like the idea of talking to Matt Lovallo, the pgc furbearer biologist. I spoke with him actually yesterday and feel we have a good repore.
-
On another vein...it absolutely drives me nuts that crows cannot be killed 365 24/7. The decimate songbird species and we protect them. What a bunch of crap...I hate crows! Unfortunately, this is linked to Mexico crow species and federal law so we are stuck.
-
Mike first off you are an officer with the PPHA, and as an officer you carry the same weight as any other. If you do as you say "have a good repore" with Mike Lovallo then by all means you should be the guy to handle this. Maybe you can work through him to get all the information you will need to make a presentation to the PGC for the changes that you and the rest of us are seeking. I wish you good luck and please keep us updated as to your progress with this matter, I'm sure everyone will be anxious to see how you make out with this matter. Thanks again...Rick
P.S. I think your organizing a letter/ email campaign is a great idea, but why couldn't this be done now instead of waiting for spring? Just an idea. Thanks again...Rick

Not sure why you keep thanking me for something I said I was not doing in my role? Wierd...

I am curious to see what everyone thinks would be fair/reasonable requests to the PGC. Please llist any ideas you have below. If/however this is done we need to make sure the pgc is very aware how much the ppha appreciates them and their service to predator hunters. They have done alot of positive things for us.
I feel some things might not be reasonable. While I love the AR-15 and my son competes with them, I don't feel it would be fruitful to lobby their use for predator hunting. Too much negative emotion around that image with the media, etc. Just my opinion for what it is worth...
I'll start a suggestion / wish list:
1.) Allow the hunting of Bobcat on Sunday during the season.
-
I'd like to see the bobcat trapping and hunt season to run together, instead of trappers getting first shot at them and the hunters coming in after. I'd hate like hell to scout an area that has a big ol' tomcat only to find out a trapper took him a week before I was allowed to hunt it
-
You know there is time to introduce hunting bobcats this year yet for next year. January the pgc commissioners has another meeting.

Check out the article on page 40 of the January game news on late season hunting opportunities, reading it sounds like the cat hunting season ends on Jan. 6, hope not cause I've been holding off on calling in a couple areas I know have cats until Jan. 15, also reads to me like you can hunt coons on Sundays? Think they would get it right in their own magazine?
