Title: Let me know if this is legal...
Post by: icecube on August 14, 2012, 10:49:06 PM
Before trapping season is it all right to put out "bait ". I'm thinking of putting out some beef jerkey at spots I might try to trap some coyotes. Maybe they get used to the beef jerkey and let their guard down later in the season. What do you think....ED

Ed
I'd suggest roadkills and eat the jerky yourself.

If you stop 30 days before season it should be ok.  Dont be scared to call the GC with questions like this.  I call them all the time with stupid questions.

Why would you need to stop 30 days before hand,You are allowed to use bait at your sets as long as Jesus cannot see it.LOL

Baiting for Coyotes is legal for 'CALLING Coyotes', illegal TRAPPING Coyotes.
Confused?
Bait may not see from the air (exposed) when trapping Coyotes.

My feelings on baiting Coyotes is mixed. One can't bait for Bear, but one can go behind the cabin and bait for Coyote legally.

As it was explained to me by the man in Harrisburgh,  it would be considered a baited area.  Which means it can not be hunted or trapped for 30 days after the bait has been removed.

"Baiting" and useing "bait" are two completely diffrent things.  Baiting is feeding wild life and useing bait is attracting them.  But do what you want or ask the GC.

I understand all of your points, But he was talking about some jerky, I cant see that as a baited area, I was taking it as " He wanted to put out some jerky to see if they would come to a predetermined location " I was not thinking about someone laying 5lbs of jerky out on a daily basis.

Why would you waste good jerky on a yote or fox when there is plenty of roadkill laying all over the place. That would be a hell of alot more natural than stickin a piece of jerky in a hole.....?
