Title: First Coyote of the season
Post by: predhunter82 on August 06, 2012, 10:19:43 PM
Got to do a little eradication tonight. Not bad for 30 minutes on stand. Young 25 pound male. Now to let it cool off a couple weeks and continue to thin out the pack!!!

I spread a little salt peeper on him with a 22-250 shooting 50 gr. hornady v-max. This shot hit his front shoulder blade. I have been toying with developing a new load for this. However this is not a good kill to base this off of. I my opinion this is just poor shot placement. This year I am more concerned about pelt damage on my predators as I am learning how to skin and prepare my furs so I want to get a caliber that has the most minimal pelt damage. Right no I am thinking of switching over to a .204 ruger for yotes and I am VERY interested in hornadys new 17 hornet for fox and coon. With the 17 hornet I also feel lke I would be able to make a clean kill on a coyote if it came into one of my fox sets. The only thing is  am waiting to see if savage will off this as a caliber of choice in its 10 series predator models. What are your guys opinions on the .204 ruger for coyotes (specifically lack of pelt damage and the ability to put an animal down). I am also curious to shear about what you all think about .17 hornet. After looking at the ballistics I personally think think that this is an awesome caliber for daily use on anything up to bobcats. I would not hesitate in the least to make a good shot on a yote with one of these.  Oh by the way 71 days until fox season starts. Anyone else getting excited? I know I am!!!!!!

Two seasons ago I had shot a coyote with a 204 dropped him on the spot ,but i still prefer my 22-250 Little more range.far as fox season can't get here fast enough.

While I have not used one, based on the gun data I feel that the minimum caliber for a coyote is a .22 Hornet or a .17 Fireball.  The .17 Hornet doesn't have the energy for coyotes.   If you want something more go with the .17 Remington.

Abolt- Do you get alot of pelt damage on your fox with your 22-250? If this works good for you how many grain bullet are you using?

Seeking Coyotes- I guess I should have been a little more clear on what I was asking about the 17 hornet. I would never think about going after yotes with anything less then a 22 hornet as well. However I was thinking about the 17 hornet for fox, coon, and bobcat. According to hornady the velocity and energy at a 100 yards is 3650fps/ 592 ft- lbs. According to remington.com the 22 hornet at a 100 yards is 2271fps/ 401 ft-lbs. The ballistics I got for the 22 hornet are with a 32 gr. accutip. I got not find any specific bullet data for the 17 but this is the closest match I could find.

All in all I think the 17 hornet is going to be a good little cartridge for smaller predators/varmints. Now I just hope that savage will begin offering it in there predator series rifles.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that for fox I use a 22 hornet and for strictly coyote calling I use the 22-250. I have taken coyotes with hornet ,but i will only take head shots on coyotes with the hornet. When fox season closes then out comes the 22-250 .

The 17 Hornet seems to me like maybe the best caliber out there now for fox, coon, etc.  It just falls to short for coyote.  I don't know much about bobcat but for some reason folks who hunt them tend to want a .223 or larger gun.  If you get a Hornet my advice would be to stock up on brass.  I can't find brass anymore for my .17 Fireball.
