What do you guys like to do when you start calling and right away you get coyotes howling and yipping back at you? I went out last night the wind was calm, I sneaked in there real quiet and started off with an invitation howl and right away a couple coyotes couple hundred yards away answered back at me so i stayed quiet for about ten minutes then did a challenge howl and they didn't call back so then i called a couple more times and waited 20 more minutes and never saw them. What are your thoughts?

One of the hardest things to do is "speak" coyote, its tough to say what went wrong, but I've been told usually if they howl back... They're coming. You just have to sit tight and ride it out. What I would have done is the vocalization, then attempted distress. Means strange coyotes are in the area and they've made a kill on your turf.

I would have waited them out silent with maybe a little distress thrown in. I wouldnt have howled back. They knew you were there for better or worse. Jmo

my7pointmonster- Thanks for the input, my foxpro only has coyote pup distress doesnt have just regular coyote distress i'll have to practice it with my mouth call and try that next time im in that situation.
bigben- that's what i thought too if i could go back i would of just stayed silent. thanks

i would have challenged them right away or just kept quiet like big ben said. its very hard to call coyotes in this time of year in pa but i think howls are the way to do it right now just have to give them what they want to hear and be very patient. good luck!

I would not have done a challenge howl.To be honest I have not had good luck when they howled at me.In your situation if I was itching to try something I would use your pup distress or a whimper if you have one.Make yourself sound like a wimp.

thanks for the advice, I know there's no definite answer just wondering what you guys would of done. So when you say that you would either challenge right away or wait them out silent whats the deciding factor when your in that situation? Do you just make a guess on what you think would be better or is there a way in telling what would be better? I did an invitation howl twice then turned the call off and those coyotes started going crazy no idea how many there were because i know two coyotes can make a lot of noise and sound like a whole pack but they were howling and yipping for about 20 seconds then shut up and never heard them again or saw them. So, based on that do you sit quiet or challenge? If they were challenge howling back at you then it would be good to do a challenge howl right? im not sure if thats what they were doing though

Challange this female two years ago in the big hunt. Two mins later she had her nose on the FX5.

Big Natural Gear fan here as well Brush lol! Hard fast rules for coyote vocalizations are hard to come by due to many variables. Alphas, Betas etc., Territories, overlapping home ranges, breeding season, pressure, transient vs resident just to name a few. I look at speaking coyote as an advanced tactic where many variables need to be considered for the utmost success in the field. The PA male in the above picture showed his hand to me and was very aggressive along with his mate. That was a fatal error. Three minutes later he was drt after speaking the right language. A kiyi sealed the deal on the female who was heading for parts unknown after I shot the male. Challenge howls can be a risky move if the time isn't right. I don't usually ever start out with them thats for sure but, when they work it sure is nice. Good luck talking to the yotes.

Ryan - Not sure if I will be at that venue next year. Just to far ahead to want to start making a schedule for 2013 shows. You missed out last night. I needed a downwind guy. I couldn't seal the deal on a yote that I had about 150 yards away. Where I was going to sit you it would have been maximum 30 yards for ya. Thanks for blowing me off lol.
