Title: 204 or 223 on fox/coyotes?
Post by: RyanX on January 15, 2012, 08:28:28 AM
Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you guys use the 204 for fox or coyotes? If so what kind of fur damage are you getting. Also how does the 223 perform on coyotes and foxes?
Thanks for any info!

Well those calibers you mentioned are going to have a bunch of fur damage for a fox. Good Yoty calibers, but for a gun that will be good on both, a .17 Fireball is the "best". Just something to think about.

I can speak for the 17 fireball. Great caliber. Out of the cailbers that I used in the past the fireball does the best on fur damage. Almost 99% will be very little damage if any. Just watch your hard angle shots. The 204 you are giog to get damage on foxes. I can not speak for the 223.

17 center fires...just don't hit them in the head or in the spine...Of course head shots are not frowned on by most fur buyers...I have a 204 Ruger but have yet to shoot a fox with it because it's just to much!!If your going to use the 204 ruger, 22250, 223 rippers try to shoot them in the chest with hopes of the bullet going back to the southend with no exit wound.. many times you can't call your shots... If your a new hunter don't mess around with worrying about the chest either... You really need to pay your dues and shoot every fox you can at night with a rifle...

I used to use the 204 for fox and coyotes. It rips the fox up like crazy. Even facing towards you, if you are not dead center in the chest the bullet will open up the fur the whole way to the but. I shot several coyotes with my 204 and had a hard time tracking them down. My problem was using hornady 32 grain v-max. A hollow point would of performed better. I now use either a 17 fireball, 17 hmr, 12 gauge, 223, or 223 wssm. I hope to upgrade to a 22-250 once I get my 223 wssm equipped with a scope and all set to go.

223 is the best use pointed soft points not much damage.i dont fully trust a 204. If you hit a coyote in the shoulder you may not get it

.223 sp shoot length wise in the chest or right behind the shoulder.  even if there is a 1" hole in the side atleast they are laying DRT when I walk up to them.  can't have fur damage without finding the kill first.
