Title: 223-12 guage over&under
Post by: coonreaper on April 16, 2011, 02:05:14 PM
i just got a savage 223-12 guage over and under. im heading down to wesst virginia next weekend on a turkey hunt, and in their spring season they allow you to use rifle or shotgun in the spring season. i was wondering what type of ammo works best for turkey in the 223. i am going to try to shoot one with the shotgun but as we all know turkeys are prone to hanging up just out of shotgun range so i would like the fact of being able to use a rifle as well. there is a good chance that we could see some yotes while turkey hunting so it will also be good for that. any recomendations on the best ammo type?

I would look hard at bonded bullets, something that won't expand too fast or fragment much at all. I have a few of these, http://palmettostatearmory.com/1829.php . I haven't had the time yet to run any through my .223/5.56s but reviews are very good and it's a decent price for a bonded tip. I believe it's a bullet from Federals Fusion line. Let us know what you decide to run and how it works out for you.

Ya I would rather shoot a turkey with a partition bullet then a varmint bullet... If you could find the  223 factory ammo that is loaded with the Partition.. Not sure but I do think Winchester sells the 223 with the 60 grain Partition deer bullet????????????????????????????????If...you knew someone that reloads they could reload some for you...

i ended up gettin the 55 grain remington bullets cause that was the highest grain i could find. i shot the gun in and it was shooting pretty good but it was windy as hunn so i might have to make some adjustments before i take er into the woods. what grain for the 223 would be best for foxes? and for yotes?

I sent you a P. M.   However info received Right from Gerald Stewart the 223 Winchester Silvertip Ballistic bullets are fur friendly for predator hunting.. He was using them on a hunt on one of his videos..
Reloaders can get the 50 and or the 55 grainers Silvertip with the Combined Technologies name brand on them... I would suggest the 50 grainers for the 223 calbier guns..

Yep a bit windy today for sighting in... Make sure you shoot a couple more rounds at a target prior to entering the woods...
