Title: coyote and fox gun
Post by: coonreaper on March 02, 2011, 05:31:53 PM
I'm lookin on gettin a new coyote gun sometime this year. my first choice as of now would be the 22-250 cause it only drops 6 inches at 300yds. i alrady have a 17hmr that i shoot 20gr xtp's in but want somethin alittle bigger for yotes. Any other caliber suggestions for a guy who has a fairly limited budget? prob can't go over $600 including scope.

I would go with the 22-250 or the 220 swift. I just bought a 223 wssm, but haven't got it set up for coyotes yet. I currently use a 204 and don't like it, but I plan to try some berger hollow points for next year and see how they perform. A 22-250 is on my 'to buy' list as well. I just can't stop buying guns when I get a deal on one.  ;D

i always thought a 204 would be good but from what i hear they're expensive. same with 17centerfire. id probably get a savage 22-250 with a simmons 4-12x scope because both savage and simmons are usually priced pretty fairly. I got a 223over 12 guage 3.5 inch that i wanna buy from my unkle but idk if he'd sell it. ill look into both of the guns. Do you think that a 4-12x scope would be good enough for shootin up to 250 or possibly more? I also got a 6mm but its like a 40sum year old gun that has a lot of family value that i wouldn't wanna have to worry bout damaging.

In season with Fox I use one of the 17 center fires... After fox season if there are any areas that I will get shots past 300 yards  for coyotes I will  elect to take a rifle and it will be the  22250 from now on...I would use the 204 Ruger with the right bullet too..

Also will start to use the 223/12 Savage 24V... should I get it to shoot well with both rifle ammo and shotgun ammo with no change in point of 0.

Yep I know him well... We called in two fox for him too on the hunt...How did he do fox hunting this year?  Send me a P. M. and let me know?  Hope he likes his Kill Light Like I like my Kill Light..Tell him he needs to buy another one for scanning too.... Also...could be that he might want one of the Coyote Lights that Cliff sales instead..

Sounds good... IMO I Kind of stay away from V-Max bullets when you use the 204 Ruger... I like HP.....

dang id say its a good price lol. theres a 22-250 at gander in york i wanna get but i don't have a job lol. the only job i got at this time is trappin and lord knows that pays didly squat anymore lol. this was my first year trappin and the money i maid just barely paid for the traps and supplies lol. next years the moneymaker though cause everythings paid off. Itd be nice to add some hunted foxes and yotes to that total though lol

I would buy that savage 204 if I was you. That is a good gun for a good price. A 4-12 power scope is plenty good out to 250 and beyond. Ub is right. Only use hollow points. I learned the hard way. The good thing is that I have lots of V-max bullets for crows and groundhogs. Savage makes a good shooting gun you can't really go wrong with buying one of them.

22 Hornet or the 17 center fires are better fox guns but you best hit them square with it.. No head shots or hits high around the spine...Shoot for the chest and or the shoulder...

haha yah id say. the 17hmr does pretty good for foxes where im at cause im not usually shooting over 100-150 yards. if anyone ever does use the 17hmr just stay away from v-maxes for fox because they dont penetrate. a friend hit two with the vmaxes and they both went at least 100+ yards. he found both of them but mainly because there was snow to track blood in. if there wasn't snow we probably would have never known we hit it lol. I havent got a chance to shoot one with the 20gr xtp's yet but i hear they do a lot better

The 20 grain make a difference. Try them, you'll like them.

yea im the one who shot the fox and yea the one ran 150 yards through deep snow and required another shot to bring it down it was on its last leg though but i couldnt believe how tough it was but yea for next year im definitely sticking with the 20 grainers hopefully itll put em down in a lot shorter of distance if it wasnt for the snow im not sure if we couldve found her she didnt bleed a whole lot

Here is a person who has good wisdom about using V-Max bullets...
