Title: Squirrel barks
Post by: lone howler on December 25, 2009, 08:08:27 PM
The other day i was calling in a wooded area. And further down the ridge i heard a squirrel start barking like mad. I turned to watch that direction to see if anything was coming and nothing. Will squirrels start barking if they see a predator below them?   There were no other hunters in the area, because i know they bark like mad when i alert them bow hunting.

I know first hand that they will bark at a bob cat comming in. While hunting from my treestand in archery season I heard them barking from 100 yards away then 60 yards away then 20 yards away. Then I saw two bob-cats twice in the last year come in and when they left I could hear the squirrel's barking as the cats left....ED

I followed a the barks/chatter of squirrels one time on two yotes. Called into my hunting partner and he missed both. Still a great experience. By the way this was just at dusk.

Most definately squirrels and other prey will sound off for predators.  I especially keep an ear out for birds in the evening.

I use my uncles decoys and have had squirrels bark at them. They have even came from great distances to check the dekes out.
