Title: Coyotes - Furbearer Lic or not
Post by: scott on December 14, 2009, 03:40:34 PM
This time of year you see a lot of pictures of coyotes that are shot by bear hunters or deer hunters.  Do you think you should have to have a Furbearer licences to kill a coyote in PA?

IMO Yes.  I do not see the coyote as a varmit , they are an extremely educated animal at the top of the predator  chain and sometimes it gets to me when someone shoots one because they are in the wood after another animal.  What really ticks me off is when a guy shoots one and lets it lay.  Not so bad if the guy gets the fur tanned or the skull bleached but just to let it rot into the ground takes away what some of us consider a real trophy.

I agree. Anyone that wishes to shoot at a furbearer should have to pay for the license. I try all year to harvest a coyote and I pay $20 for hunt raccoons and fox and I feel deer/bear hunters should as well.

I think this is how the commission controls some of the populations of coyotes.  I too wish they would not hunt them and save them for me...However think about this....The ones they shoot on deer stand are the dumbs ones... Your getting the smart coyotes with call and gun...

However while on deer stand if a coyote came by me it's getting shot...However I be taken out of the woods with me at the end of the day...If I got a buck or a doe too...The coyote would be wrapped up in a plastic garbage bag and riding inside the cavity of the deer  on it's trip out of the woods...

Any of our wildlife is a resource and it should be used....

Just got a text from my hunting partner, one of the neighbors shot a blonde coyote behind the house on Saturday.  Well hopefully it was the Alpha male or female.

Uncle Buck, I don't agree with you about the coyotes being shot as the dumb ones.  One does not have to have intellegence or lack of it to wonder within 100 yards of a treestand.  I do agree that the Game Commission uses the deer and bear hunters as a tool to control the population.

Scott, I think everyone who wishes to hunt Coyote should buy a furbearers license.

Greetings,
I also agree that a furbearer lic should be required.  Perhaps a poll of the membership and then addressed at an officers meeting.

Well Scott it should tick you off if they let them lay.........it is also a game law violation...they must make an attempt to retrieve any wildlife or game they have shot.  I don't agree with license requirement. Who would enforce it? A little like the pts. per antler rule...how many bucks either get left or get carted home untagged because somebody guessed wrong...this is a sport by its very nature requires personal integrity...sadly some have none...

Suppose we could slap the deer hunter on the back that shoots a coyote during deer season and say  "Good Shot!"

Wow  the one I saw on deer stand near Indiantown Gap back in 1987 was hauling it up the side of the mountain....Now for a deer hunter to hit that thing going 40 MPH...They would deserve the recognition of being a good shot for sure...Come to think of it.  Me thinks that was one of them there smart coyotes....

you guys can wish upon a star all you want. the PPHA spoke with the PGC about this awhile back and they will not make the furbearer lic manditory to shoot coyotes due to the current management plan.

coyote population is growing rapidly in this state and the PGC wants all hunters, all the opportunity, all year long to shoot one to keep the population somewhat under control. granted we all know that the more coyotes you shoot the more pups pop out the following spring in a general area. but being PA has the most hunters in any state they figure this will be the best solution.

I was just on the annual Presque isle deer hunt last thursday and friday here in Erie. During the safety meeting the PGC and the park ranger told everyone not to shoot the coyotes as they are protected there and that 2 have radio collars.

Very interesting. Is that in writing somewhere and is there anywhere else that the coyotes are protected ? ???

This is my last year for a combined license.  I will have to pay the big bucks next year.  Groundhog hunters shoot coyotes, and fox,and leave them lay here.

Here's my theory. I pay as much for my furtakers license as most pay for their regular licence. For my $20 license I get to hunt Raccoons and fox. For a regular $20 license. You can harvest A buck,2 turkey,6 squirrels a day,4 rabbits a day,2 grouse a day,2 pheasants a day, Crows,groundhogs,4 quail a day.
Seems like the furtaker should get a little more for their buck. Not everyone collects enough fur to make a mint from it. I should have the advantage on coyotes being I payed into the furtakers bank. Just my opinion. The average hunter gets enough chances to score for $20. I think anything that can or is considered a furbearer should be harvested with an appropriate tag.

Dear misguided,
You get to slaughter unlimited grey fox, red fox, raccoons, etc. with the option to sell the hides for profit.  How many pheasants did you kill this year and what did you get for them?

Good ol' Bp, Never have anything to offer but a smart remark. Like a moth to the flame. The PPHA has an event and you pop up to get the boards going again.  ::) :-*
