Title: What do most of you do....
Post by: icecube on November 25, 2009, 07:29:35 AM
When hunting by myself after dark, I've only done it twice so far. Do you guys listen for the fox, coyote and such or do they come in quiet. Or do I need my light on and look for there eyes....ED

I keep my light on at all times and scan.  but if there are leaves or high grass and your caller is low enough in volume then yes you can hear em coming

where is the general area that you live at ice cube.

I leave my headlamp on at all times even when I'm walking in to set up. I let the situation dictate if I will try to listen or not. Most winter nights you will here them crushing heavy frosted leaves or rushing in to your call. Sometimes I have wasted time over sounds by standing around to long on stand cause I heard something below me that ended up being a opossum or heard something on my way to a stand and prevented me from making a proper setup in fear of driving the animal to the next farm. I really only try to focus on eyes but if it's a cold crisp January night I will listed until I find the eyes of the animal making it the sound.

BigBen, I live in Montgomery county, but I hunt in Bradford county in a small town called New Albany. Lots of coyotes there and I'm trying to get rid of them because the deer population is way down. On my game camera's I've gotten pictures of bobcat, grayfox, coons and coyote's. So there is no shortage of preadators around....ED

The only time I hear gray fox coming is on the stones along railroad tracks..
Keep your light on when you depart your vehicle and until you get back...Serves so many purposes:  Safety, allows the land owner to know it's you, and evey now and then you may catch a fox going in or one coming in late to your calling when going out....
