I know this topic gets covered many ways, but I was wondering what most of you like to use this time of year for call sounds? It seams as the season gets later the preference for certain sounds changes.Should we be using more territorial and mating sounds and give up on the food sounds?
-
i think it all depends on how much pressure your hunting area gets. if you know your hunting areas where other callers are hunting.....you gotta figure the local predators have heard their fill of dyin bunny by this time of year. maybe go to bird sounds instead. i have to experience with the fox vocalizations while calling.
in any case, prey distress sounds work no matter what time of year, change it up an keep it fresh.
-
It sure is frustrating when you go into an area with hour old snow and see fresh tracks and leave empty handed. The calls that worked so well early in the season no longer produce.I know for a fact that coyotes will defend their territories, will a fox do the same thing? If so territorial calls of some type would seem to work the best.Maybe this is just mother natures way of protecting the family groups so we have something to harvest next year.

This is the time of the year when the predators have earned their masters degrees. Very well educated. I learned that last night.

Foxhole & Buttbuster, almost sounds like a xxx movie!

I'm to old for triple x, so I've downgraded myself to double x.

Deer sounds work for the rut.Turkey sounds work for spring gobbler.Fox sounds should work for mating season.Sounds pretty simple. The trouble is most of the electronic sounds are distress sounds and at least for me the fox sounds are hard to immitate with a mouth call.

try this american singer canary 1
We killed fox over a similar canary sound.
We now use this one.

I think the sounds grab there attention

Interesting sound, not a distress sound for sure. Was your success on reds or grays?
-
we got 1 gray,and 5 reds.we dont have alot of fox.Mostly coyotes.
And reds for prior years.
-
How about a Gerbal call?
-
Might work. where can you get one of those?
-
Foxpro has a few rodent sounds that sound like gerbals...
-
Is there anybody that knows of a mouth call that can sound like a gray fox pup or bark like a fox?
-
most enclosed reeds if they are tuned right can do it. the only one I know of that can do it right off the get go is one of ernie wilsons calls.

The johnny stewart fc1 made a good bark from what I remember. The squalls called in fox too.

I'm just learning but I know for sure hunting pressure makes a world of difference. 1 set never been called/hunted - grey within 10 minutes. 2 sets where I know theyre pressured saw eyes at a distance? I dont think its a coinicidenc
-
Open reed calls for me all the way. Critter call, Sceery call, Tweety calls-3, Dan thompson pup howler

You learn fast. Good observation!
-
Speaking about Gerbals? I think Bp is into them.
-
pressure is a big factor thats for certain.
using new and different call sounds and how they are presented and changed during the set works wonders on pressured animals.

Nope, their into you!

I only use Foxpro as a coxer 75% of the time. I keep foxpro running all the time while using a hand call. Muttbuster will tell you how i work the call.
-
Foxpro,When using both calls is it best to work them both at the same time or alternate?
-
I'm not sure whats best but we use them at the same time and it works well for us. They're are several ways to do it. Maybe some of the other guys on here can tell you how they do it. We run the Foxpro at low volume for a few minutes and then use a hand call for about 10 to 15 seconds. The Foxpro is running the whole time. It's best to use a rat squeaker or something similar to that to pull them in.
-
I have tried multiple calls at the same time with no success,I quess I didn't have the right combination.I always thought it had potential though.
-
Running the foxpro at low volume while using a hand caller is very effective. The open reed hand caller are loud so i can also very the sound pitches. I only use hand caller to get animals attention from 500 yards plus and short yards 200 yards or less. I used two types of hand callers. Long range and Short range open reed callers. Long range open reed is Sceery and Critter calls. Short range is all the tweety open reeds. The squeaker/coaxer sounds in the Foxpro unit is constant and a constant sound is what sucks the predador in. Once i see eyes by using the hand caller I STOP CALLING with it. Let the small coaxer due the job. The Foxpro coaxer must be lowered in volume as animal is comming closer. (You will kill more animal with a mild sound coaxer than you will a loud blast.) You need to be careful on correct volume here. This has been very effective for me in Texas, Wyoming and here in Pa. Hope this helps. Earl Fairman

I agree the coaxer sounds have been very affective for me also, just never used them like you do.Thanks for sharing!

Has anyone used any of the fox whistles and if so any results?
