Title: Hog Count
Post by: ColonelAngus on May 26, 2010, 10:01:07 PM
How is everyone doing this year? I have 6 with the 223 in the fields and 5 more around the barns with the shotgun. I hope to get quite a few more over the long weekend. A lot of the alfalfa and rye fields are being cut this week, and the corn and beans are still short enough to see into. Should be good.

Got one yesterday at 260 yards. Buddy got two at around 265 yards. Shot at one at 1126 yards. Bullet went two feet high. Down ward shot. Could not see follow up shot impact to adjust. Groundhog looked like an ant at that yardage even in a 42 power scope.

I got three with the 22250 Encore....One of the farms that I do hunt chucks on they planted corn in the fields that I like to shoot the chucks...So chuck hunting there will be over for the year   soon... Of course there are other places to go too.

got my first one of the season yesterday.  been pretty busy.  I got a pm from a fellow hunter asking about going ghog hunting soon and I got the itch.  I drove to a friends house that has a problem.  I sat for about an hour and got one and seen two others.

looking back at where I shot from.  I was sitting under the clump of trees in the middle of the screen. appx 200yds

I am hoping to get out and get some more in the coming weeks.  the field edge is lined with a bunch of active holes.  gonna be hard to get em to come to this side though because there is a bean field on the other side of the trees.  I figure a few morning hunts should get them thinned down a bit.

I killed two this evening. Just got set up, didn't even have my clip in my rifle and I looked over my shoulder and saw two hogs together at about 80 yds. I quietly inserted my clip and closed my bolt. I wondered if I could get a double. I slid around on my folding hunting seat and got into position with my Stoney Point rapid bi-pod shooting sticks. The hogs were one foot apart. The one on the left stood up and my 17hmr 20gr parted his hair right between his eyes. As he was flipping back I ejected my spent shell and loaded a new one. The other hog turned and looked at his friend and I opened up his ear canal. That was my first double that close together. After that, all I saw was a red fox chasing a cotton tail threw the field. Lots of fun. It really felt good to get out and enjoy the sport I love.

well the second part of that field got cut so now I should be open to shoot 500yds in that field.  not sure if I will hit anything that far but I am gonna try.  farmers right now are cutting all their hay.  it seems their all in sync.  its all coming down at once.  next few weeks gonna be busy after work.

3 chucks this evening with the 22250 Encore and Combined Tech (Win/Nosler) 50 grain Silver Tip reloads..H380 powder...

Shot with a 22250...The 50 grain Silver Tip. One could see that the 22250 is to much gun for fox. This round is not a fur friendly round...This particular one was shot at 100 yards.

I would also like to add that Gerald Stewart made comment that the 50 Grain Silver Tip were fur friendly. however this would be when using the 222 Rem or the 223. As obvious by the 50 grains Silver Tip affect when using a 22250.

Not as good as last year. I got 26 so far the longest one at 325 yrds with a .223. Last year I got 68. This year I had a bout with Colon Cancer. All better now.
