wind question?

  Do you always have the wind to your back? and the call in front of you?

I'm rather new at this but from what i"ve read in most set ups wind at your back and the call behind you.If i wrong I hope someone else will chime in and correct me.

i believe you want cross wind  in front of you with caller up wind

i get downwind of the caller and off to the left or right 20 or 30 yards to the side i don't think they are going to come from.  I have also had them come in on the upside wind of the caller but few and far between.   reds i like to be about 100 yards, grey 25 to 30, and yotes 100 up to 200.

Either cross wind, left to right or right to left is my favorite. In hunt with a partner and one watches left and one watches right. In certain situations I will hunt down wind or even up wind. Depends on location and where I think they will be coming from. Even then, they will surprise you. Always expect the unexpected.

I went out sat night down along 993 and got back doored (upwind) by a yote popped up on the tracks at about 35-40yds. gone just as fast no shot offered

There was a time I  would just hunt down wind of the electronic caller (Speaker) or mouth caller and set up cross wind of the main beam.



Just this year... I learned so much about Eastern coyotes...

Sometimes I set up downwind, sometimes I set up in back of the speaker,  sometimes I aim the speaker up wind and set up down wind...


The things you take into consideration are the animal being targeted...

The terrain

The size of the land


The weather conditions

The firearm your using

safety issues in tight space



I think the best way to sum it up is how to read each and every place your hunt. The firearm and shotgun choke you have in the gun too.....  weather conditions that prevail. Also you got to  put yourself in the predator paws.
