Why not the 243 instead of the 223 and the 22250?

trappinjohn brought this up on another web site... wonder why we do not use the 243 more for chucks, and coyotes instead of the 223 and the 22250...The 243 or 6MM can be used for deer or predators or varmints...The reloader now can even get 55 grain Silvertipbullets  for the 243 to reload.......


There are times I think about using the rifle in windy conditions... the 17 CF, 223, and the 22250 will be impact by heavy winds... might be good to have a 243 sighted in for those special hunting situations..

I have also thought it would be nice to have a 2506 sighted in with some varmint bullets to hunt chucks during windy conditons.....

I like to use one gun fox predtors,  i think a .243 would be too much for fox, but would be ok for coyotes and chucks.  as far as wind goes,  you are driving down the road in a sports ulitity vehicle and there is a 40 wph cross wind and the car behind you is a small sports car, which one gets pushed all over the road?

Good point there on the size of vehicles...However when I road hunt I rather use the SUV vehicle to road hunt with instead of the sports car..  However the sports car tire thread would wreck less of the pelt up???

Won't work. After all these years of telling my Wife that I need a different rifle for each critter, she'll never believe I could do it all with one rifle.

Why not the 243? 75 gr bullets @ moderate velocities should be very deadly. Not overly destructive. 55 grainers for varmint hunting.

Why not the 243?  Once I get the 243 zeroed for deer using the 90 grain Partition bullets...Never shot a varmint bullet out of the 243 yet...However did purchase some of them there Combined Technology Win/Nosler 55 grainer.  My problem is time.  I  have to many things going..So hard to just shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot.

Could be like this?  How many trout you get?  "None....Been shooting"  How Many Channel Cats You Get?  "None....Been Shooting!" How Many Chanterelle, Morel, Hen Of The Wood, Chicken Mushrooms, Brick tops, Oyster Mushrooms,   Blewets Mushrooms you get?  "None...Been Shooting"
How Many Fish You Get ice Fishing?....."None Been Shooting" etc etc etc etc etc


I kind of hate to mess with my zero on certain guns because of TIME....
There was a time when I use to hunt deer with a bow but I said to myself....What am I doing here? See so hard to be a Jack Of All Trades.
Does bother me though...Might have to do what them their teachers do and do a sabbatical and not do all the stuff mentioned above and just Shoot shoot shoot shoot.

I think my next gun is going to be a .243.  probably a savage or stevens.  I have been looking for a good deer gun and something to shoot at hogs.  of course my .223 suits me fine for hogs.  in the end though can anyone have too many guns?  that is the million dollar question.

Just got my 243 back yesterday....it was one that was built on a Mauser Mdl93 action....It is unique because the barrel has 12 lands and grooves...working on a 55 gr Nosler Ballistic tip load for critters...need some range time now...

Im new to this all but Ive been using a ruger .243 and they has a 55 grain round and i have taken 3 fox with it this season and there has been no major damage to the pelt, i was amazed however when saturdays red ofx manaded to run about 20 yds when shot behind th efront shoulder. there quite a tough and amazing animal .

Truly like the 243 aka 6MM for deer hunting...Never even shot varmint loads out of mine....Probably best if your going to use a 243 that you do go to the varmint bullets instead of using deer bullets... There are so many positive reasons to use the varmint bullet instead of the deer 100 grainer.... Fragmentation for one..... Could open more hunting lands that you could use the fragment bullets instead of the mushrooming deer bullets...
In the mountains on PGL no big deal shooting down from a ridge with a 243 100 grainer... However go to the farm country and it's best to have a 85 grain fragment HP when using any 243 or  6MM...
I have killed fox in the daytime using a 6 MM pump and reduced load FMJ.  Wow worked great to could hardly tell that the fox was hit with anything.. However since FMJ or deer bullets can not fragment like a HP this type of bullet will never be used by me anymore..


243 AKA 6MM with deer bullets 95=100 grainer's are OK for hunting from a ridge... However best if your going to hunt farm lands or populated areas to go to HP fragment type bullets for sure...

Wind will not effect bullets at normal predator range. The 223 and 22-250 have plenty of energy for predators. Anything bigger is overkill with increased recoil and additional cost.

Check out the rem. predator when you buy one. They are a very nice rifle. But my buddy and I both bought one on the same day,same store,same time. the only difference was his was a 204 mine was a 223 they both shot very good. They also, both of them scratched the brass very bad. I wrote to rem. twice with no reply either time. We took them to a gun smith we know real well and he said we had the 6th and 7th one with the same problem. The chamber had very bad burrs in them. They are both ok now. However I do like it very much and it shoots real well.
