Title: Buckwheat, Nuisance trapping
Post by: Hern on February 22, 2017, 05:06:52 PM
I set 4 cage traps at the back of our property, on Monday.
Am doing nuisance work for myself on Possums & Skunks.
Buckwheat, I need advice to catch thesehere critters...No nuisance critters yet.

Tuesday, I had a xxxxL Coon, released unharmed
Today this darn non-target...released unharmed

Them critters in your yard Hern just want to be friends. Stop scaring them to death.

Well the answer to this is very simple and honestly Hern I don't understand this coming from you!!  Quit baiting your box traps with coon and fox.  :o :o :o  Everyone knows Skunks and Grinners like Goose the best. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Lookn4SimpleHonestAnswers...I will try Goose for bait. Never thought of that.

foxhound, I feed 'em & leave Fox alone around here. Reds & Greys.
Sorta keep some close by for my own research. By that- with trail cams... Testing lures, watching foot placement when approaching bait, how and when bait piles work  and more.

Hern, I have a couple reds close to home.. I've decided to let them be too. The fox population here isn't what it used to be. I have called them a few times to see what sounds trigger a response. They seemed to really like like the foxpro field mouse distress. I was amazed at how far out it came from for such a soft sound. I think a lot of people getting started in predator calling underestimate how well they really can hear.

I can understand your dilemma. I have a hard time catching non-target Critters also. But my grandson he's only six and he catches skunks on Goldfish crackers that his mom gives them for a snack. He's no longer allowed to set the Trap around the house anymore. His dad gets upset about letting skunks go. Hope this helps.

Last Thursday-
An update...
I finally caught a Possum & another Raccoon in the backyard. Dry cat food & Chicken bones.

That day I noticed Pictures of a missing Cat, on nearby telephone poles.
Same afternoon, I spotted the missing Cat sitting by my woodshop. I called the number, husband & wife came over fast. The Cat was gone. We searched high & low. No Cat.
The folks left.
So I set two live cage traps baited with dry Cat food next to our wood shop.
Shortly after dark, My wife said, 'you have Sonny, the missing Cat!" I said, 'What are you talking about?'
She replied, 'I turned on the back lights and I see he's in one of your traps!'
Another phone call to the Cat's owners. They were over in a flash.
I told the folks I put him in the cage to hold him till they got here.
They Thanked me many times.
Happy ending. Happy day.

Sonny is a 15 year old house Cat. Never escaped before. Never outside.
Escaped Monday morning. Caught Thursday night.
During that time we had 40-50 mph winds, heavy rain and cold weather.
I estimate Sonny traveled 1 mile, as the Crow flies, to our house.
Owner called Sunday afternoon and said he lost some weight, but is fine. And thanked me again.

If Lookn2shave and Abolt (Cliff) don't trim their beards soon, I'll get them a flea collar for the summer. ;D
