I was thinking of a wider bell.  Maybe 50 mm.  Whats your opinion on the 40 mm?
Title: Re: .17 Hornet
Post by: Bowman66 on January 04, 2016, 10:47:49 AM
Mine are the 40's and the glass just soaks up every little light. I have no complaints at all. My light fits perfectly on top of the 40, on the 50 you may have to tweek your light set up
Title: Re: .17 Hornet
Post by: Misterjake23 on January 04, 2016, 11:10:56 AM
With a good light on top you won't have any problems seeing with a 40 mm.  If you decide to buy the Zeiss and don't like it....  I'll buy it from you.

Of course.  Just like a car,  drive it off the lot and it depreciates 15%

Post by: Lookn4Fur on January 04, 2016, 12:24:29 PM
Wow!  You must really like that scope.  Of course if I touch it the price is doubled.  Lol  :o :o :o :o :o :o

You are talking me into it.  Do you think the reticle is too thick?
Title: Re: .17 Hornet
Post by: scott on January 04, 2016, 12:52:41 PM
Tim,

Some of the scopes are going with a bigger ocular lens on their newer models.   I put a Nikon 3x9x50 on one of my CZs and it touched when you worked the bolt.   The gun dealer said it might be a problem with some of the leupolds also.   Even on my 40s you can hardly get a piece of paper between the bolt and scope when you extract a round.

you are going to love that gun, they are accurate.

Post by: coyotejohn on January 04, 2016, 12:56:43 PM
Scott, had the same problem with my Rem 600. I just swapped out the low rings with medium rings and the problem was solved.  May or may not work with different rifles and bolt styles.

Post by: Misterjake23 on January 04, 2016, 01:47:10 PM
Tim,  I have a CZ already set up with that scope.  Let me know if you'd like to see and shoot it.  You're not that far from me.   Maybe even use that as an excuse to do a little hunting !!!

Darin,  I didn't say it was broke in.  I was simply going to let him hold it so he could get an idea what a nice rig looks and feels like!!   I hate to take it out into the woods,  I might put a scratch on the fine looking wood!   LOL

Those guns do have some pretty stocks on them. You keep yours close to the safe and I'll keep banging my around. Lol.
Really though Tim you can't go wrong with the Leupold or Zeiss in the 40mm plenty of light gathering glass for even the long shots and the carnivore lights sit perfect right on top without the problem of the 50mm bell end.

The 17 Hornet.....Now that is a predator hunters gun...I have one in a  E A Brown Encore barrel... However I'm going to start to use the MGM 17 WSMRF barrel...  Starting to buy ammo just in case it should fall along the way side.. What a shame they put out a cheap gun that will make people not want to use the rimfire.. Welp i'll be ready... Got like 1450 rounds of the three mfg ammo...  I did have the BMAG but I sold it...It was capable of killing things.. But seemed to string after the 5th shot.. So it was not target gun... I had to run the rod through it and then it went back to shooting the next  4 dead center..I never was a person to use my predator guns for target practice...

Goose poop Is in trouble now, I tried to text him but I think I hit his wife's phone number to talk about his new gun. Not sure that text went through. Will know if he's not on the board for the next couple of days.
Na, lookn4experience is not that wise yet. He still begs his wife to buy stuff. Sounds just like a little girl when he wants something rumor has it. I can't say where the rumor started but it must be fact because it,s on the Internet.

If you old coots only have one super secret way to sneak guns into the house your nothing but rookies and will be promptly stripped of your "GURU" status.  You are an embarrassment to this association!   >:( >:( >:(

By the way.  UsetoGooseHunt, I always new you looked up to me.  You buying a CZ proves it.  Now tell me how much you paid so we can all get a good laugh.  ;D ;D ;D

None of you copies cats would own a CZ if it were not for the fact I snuck two past the wife and you want to be as good a hunter as the rest of us CZ owners. Never going to happen.
Ask my wife how much I paid. $125 for both the 17 hornet and 17 rem and I will swear to it.

Lookn4recognition
There is no reason to have a bunch of ways to sneak a new gun in. If you are good at it you only need one idea. Besides when you get older you will not remember what method you used to get the gun. So just get good at one idea instead of messing up with a whole bunch of ideas your no good at. Learn to be perfect and you only need one. Like I said earlier the young bull and the old bull story.

Scott, you may not want to post in this thread.  The OLD COOTS CLUB is getting more organized by the day.  Before you know it they will all be gathered under one roof aka "The Yankee Doodle Diner".  I hope the blenders are working that day so they can drink their baked oatmeal and prunes. ;D ;D ;D  I'm taking extra diapers for pops.  The prunes go through him pretty quick. :o :o :o :o

Scott, that would be the exact deer.  The way I look at it, they don't get up until noon, they should be up all night!  I'm gonna offer to take the Jester1 and GooseBelly predator hunting some night.  After all this site is all about predator hunting. The OLD Coots Club seems to have forgotten about that.  The only problem is I only have one chair lift on my truck.  They may have to sit on each others lap to get in and out. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: .17 Hornet
Post by: scott on January 12, 2016, 08:21:14 AM
That is if you could get them to get out of the truck, you might have to wait for a 60 degree night so they are not complaining about the cold.   there are also some advantages, a cane can be used to dispatch any wounded animals and the walker would be an awesome rest with some modifications.  I just may have given Buckwheat another item to sell, customized walkers for the Old Coot predator hunter.

;) ;) ;) I roll my own; 40gr Sierra HP, with 10 grs H110, and CCI sm primer.... :-X :-X :-X :-X Hafta refine a little more as my 100 meter group was a little larger than I like, (not clover leafs) gonna push it a little faster  :P :P :P but still cat worthy  8) 8) 8)

Goose, get ya a can of Lil-Gun and see what that does for ya...

I shoot from 10gr to 13½gr with a 40gr V-Max, the only boolit I use anymore, am extremely happy with it... 10 gr shoots to one hole and the 13½ shoots to a tight cloverleaf @ 3250fps w/7 fps EV...  I use Winchester brass and Fed sm Pistol primers for the 10gr loads and CCI sm rifle Match primers for the heavy loads...

this is with a 26" barrel K-Hornet, so don't expect to get those speeds out of your shorter barrels...

back in the 70's and 80's when I was loading for them I always had a tough time finding a load to shoot good... got rid of them and didn't get another one till I started on the Encores in the mid 90's, went to lil-gun then and never looked back...

gonna use it for the 17 HH when I start loading that also... that could be a while though, I have 3 cases of factory ammo to shoot up first...

Darn good start!

Take Dale's advice and try some Lil' Gun.  My CZ527 hornet shoots just about everything good, but Lil' Gun is amazingly accurate

;) ;) ;) I would call your reloading supplier and see if he has any...I know two that I buy supplies from locally do not have any in stock.  :P :P :P You can order it but it gets a little pricey since it's a hazardous material.  :o :o :o :o :o Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander, they may have it but I wouldn't bet on it....

I am just in awe of how well the 17 Hornet factory ammo is accurate.. I have yet to reload it.. Looks like Goose did well with the H110.  I like to hear how the LIL Gun works out for you as soon as you get a chance to use it...  I will say one thing about the  17 Hornet... I have made me some $$$$$$Fur money using that caliber. However you hit the fox low in the chest it's going to rip it!! So the logic... if you have a good fox gun and we get a year that you get at least $20 -$40..bucks.. The  17 Hornet going to pay for itself!!!

That's why I take head shots with my 17 Hornet.  Using the Tri X shooting rest and with the tight groups I shoot with my 17,  I don't think twice about taking a head shot.

Goose are you loading a 17 or a 22 Hornet?... with a 40gr bullet, I'd think it was a 22, go to 12 or 12½gr and see how that shoots, work your way up from there...

Yes please stay on topic, I got chastised for not staying on topic and even had a post removed.  I will report this to the off topic police.  By the way I killed this bobcat at 736.7 yards with my 17 bucking a 35 mph east to west wind and I held dead on.  Can't beat a 17, HMR that is.  Suppose to hit 80 today.

CoyoteJohn that's a decent shot for most. But if you learn your windage and your elevation you can even go further. The longest shot I ever made was on a cotton tail rabbit. I just happen to have had to bullets soaked in salt for 3 days. I don't have a range finder to read how far it was, but it took me long enough to get there that the salt soaked bullet kept the meat fresh until I walked over to it. So yeah you should learn to use your turrent and windage knobs out past 800 yards. The 17 HMR is a man's caliber in the right hands.
Just trying to keep this post on track. I don't want to be accused of hijacking anyone's post.
Our heck, I now see it in the 17 hornet is being talked about

My partner for the past umpteen years took this guy with his .17 Hornet at about 35 yards.  I never seen him coming in nor did I see him fall but my buddy said he fell like a ton of bricks.

I have yet to reload the 17 Hornet for my Encore barrel... Most of my shots are at the 100 yard mark using the Hornady 20 grain factory VMAX... I do rip the red fox if I hit them on the lower part or the torso.. Kills them dead that's for sure. however at  100 yards using factory if red are shot in head, mouth, chest, sure above shoulder i'm still getting what someone gets for trapping a red fox..
