Title: Lets talk groundhog guns and scopes
Post by: foxpro51 on February 26, 2009, 06:06:34 PM
What are you guys using for groundhog hunting?

my .223 tikka.  it is a m595 varminter.  it is the best shooter in my stable.  though I have only shot to 300yds with it though.  I know you have some nice looking rifles.

Ben my favorite caliber. No recoil, accurate and you can see your hits. More pictures guys.

Group with my 1000 yard rifle . ( 6.5x284 caliber. ) 1000 yard shooting is not easy. Trying to hit a 5 inch wide by 18 inch tall target requires a spotter and 142 grain bullets to see splash. If i miss bullet splash will tell my spotter bullet correction i need. Wind is also a problem. We use wind meters here.

I wish I had more pics.  my usual groundhog hunting trip was grabbing the .22lr and taking a walk.  I would get within 100yds by using the rolls in the hills to setup a shot.  when these guys showed for hog hunting two years ago I could not believe my eyes when they had lawn chairs.  I said you can't be serious.  they said how do you do it.  so since then I try to reach out and touch them with the .223.  not many times do I get over a 200 yd shot though.  I would like to do more hog hunting this year.  we might do a hog challange this year just for fun.  but I know for a fact you retired fellas out in d6 would whoop everyone.  LOL.

If you guys are in the market for a groundhog gun DON"T overlook Savage varmint rifles. They shoot extremely well and don't cost a ton.

Ben, NIce group at 200 yards. Looks like it is under an inch.

The 17hmr is good to 150 yards with little to no wind. It is a very good round. It[s hard to believe that little 17 grain bullet does the damage it does. Foxpro 51 was with me when I killed 3 fox's with it this season. Last summer I killed at least 15 hogs with it. CZ, model 452 American with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 is a nice match.

Cowboy make big fire sit far, indian make little fire set close.

Unless the rules say they gotta be 1000 yards,we will see.
And you may be suprised how far us farmboys with peashooters can stretch a bullet out to.
We use jet fuel when we load.5400 fps...lol

Keep talking. I'm already killing em'. Killed 2 of 3 in the woods.

That's good if you want to eradicate them, but if you want lots of targets in the spring, let'm go for a while.

Some places I'd shoot them when I see them. I do save some fields for the gh hunt and there is one field that has a great crop grow'n as we speak. I won't hunt that field till after the first cutting. Although, the farmer gives me hell for waiting. ;D

Muttbuster explain this? How and the heck do you shoot little fox at 275 yards in the dark and miss the close ones?
Title: Re: Lets talk groundhog guns and scopes
Post by: muttbuster on February 27, 2009, 08:50:57 PM
The ones that are farther away are smarter. The close ones are dumb. I cut them a break so they can get smarter too. Then they will be a challenge for me.
