GAME COMMISSION TO OFFER HTE COURSE AT 2008 EASTERN SPORTS AND OUTDOOR SHOW

The Pennsylvania Game Commission will conduct a special two-day Hunter-Trapper Education class during the 2008 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show on Feb. 7 and 9.  Pre-registration is required and can be completed online through the Game Commission's website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on the "Hunter Education" calendar in the right-hand column of the homepage, selecting the "February" calendar and then choosing the "Register Now" button at the top of the page.

Those without access to the Internet can contact the Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education Division at 717-787-7015.

The class, which is mandatory for all first-time Pennsylvania hunting or furtaking license buyers regardless of age, will be offered from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 7, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 9.

Entrance to the class is outside of the paid entrance booth to the show via the Maclay Street entrance to the Farm Show Complex.  After entering the building, follow signs to the second floor classroom.

Purchase of show admittance is not required to attend, and there is no fee for the course.  Lunch will not be provided.

Online registration also is available via the Game Commission's website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) for those interested in taking a Game Commission basic HTE, bowhunter education or cable restraint courses elsewhere in the Commonwealth.  Simply click on the "Hunting Education" calendar in the right-hand column of the homepage, select the month of interest from the calendar and then choose the course of interest.

Directions to the Farm Show Complex parking are as follows: take Exit 67 of Interstate-81 onto Cameron Street. At first traffic light, turn right onto Elmerton Avenue, and travel to second traffic light and make a right into parking lot.  While there is a nominal fee for parking, free shuttle buses are available to the Farm Show entrance.

Facts from the Pennsylvania Game Commission:  First offered as a voluntary course in 1959, hunter education certification became mandatory for all new hunters under the age of 16 in 1969, and consisted of a four-hour course.  By 1982, all first-time hunters, regardless of age, were required to attend and pass a basic hunter education course.  In 1986, the basic hunter education course was combined with the trapper education course to become the present Hunter-Trapper Education course, and was increased to a minimum of 10 hours.
