Title: Spring Gobbler
Post by: Hern on April 06, 2016, 07:22:52 AM
Hunting predators and Spring Gobblers are my favorite hunts.
Just being in the woods in May is soothing to me. After trapping & calling during harsh conditions, it's a pleasure to sit in the woods or cover some ground. Warm sun, song birds, Morels, Leeks and Gobblers.
Any one else excited for upcoming Gobblers?

jake, you musta scared that Gobbler.

18-20 years ago, I had a Red phase Coyote come to my hen yelps during Spring Gobbler.
I heard a Gobbler nearby, sounding off. After the third time he gobbled, I thought I would let him know I was over here, yelp-yelp-yelp.
Within a minute, I saw movement. Dang, a Coyote. Coming steady and fixed on my decoys. On a string.
BANG!
Coyote down. Dang Coyotes. This was the only time I called a Coyote when Gobbler hunting.
Next morning same spot, I shot a Gobbler, what I think was the same Gobbler as yesterday.
The trapping season before, I trapped a Red phase Coyote on same property.
These were the only Red phase Coyotes that I ever heard of in my area. Both females and I assume litter mates.
When we cross paths, ask me about the Red Coyote I trapped...first time I saw that Coyote, it was tanned and hanging on a friends wall...

I hear of a lot of turkey hunters calling in coyotes.  It's not so unusual or unheard of anymore.....the coyote population is increasing quickly!!

Happens more frequently than not.  When calling in turkey country I will use a turkey call on a regular basis.

Am not going to scout today or Saturday....looks like snow flurries today and calling for a couple of inches of snow on Saturday.
Yesterday, during the rain I did a ride around. Plenty of Turkeys standing around in the fields.

Raining hard before daylight this morning. Thought I would stay home. About 8-8:30 I decided to go rain or shine. Got to my spot before 9am and the rain stopped. Set up the decoys, waited a bit then let 'em know where I was. No gobbles so I settled in. The rain finally past. Lots of bird activity, woods birds & song birds & Crows. Even a buzzard in the distance. Still no gobbles. I enjoyed watching Nuthatches, Tufted Titmouse, Downy, Red headed & Palliated woodpeckers, Wood Thrushes and a few more species, but no Gobblers.
Stayed in the woods until 11:45. Then hit a couple of new spots to look for Morels. Didn't find a Morel. So I visited a local gun shop for an hour or two. Sat down and talked with & listened to a couple of ole timers hunting and war stories. I knew two customers that came in so they joined us and talked awhile.
All in all a good day. Maybe soon the Gobblers will be talking as much as the two ole timers in the gun shop.
