Strange
« on: December 27, 2011, 09:25:06 AM »
Went out last night to a spot I had hunted twice before and called in no predators, and everytime I made the comment that I bet there is coyotes here that's why I'm not getting a response. So last night I hit it again a little different location. After calling for about 20 minutes with my light set on medium brightness and seeing no eyes I became aware of a dark object that looked out of place in the middle of the field. That wasn't there before I thought so I cranked the light to full and lit up the field and lo and behold there set a dog or coyote wasn't sure which as the farmer has several large dogs. The strange thing was that I never say any Eye reflection from this animal.I didn't have my usual gun so I only had 4 x and could not positively identify this animal .But as the animal got up and trotted away I could say that I was 90 percent sure it was coyote. But again NO EYE REFLECTION.And as the coyote left the picture I scanned to the left and picked up eyes approaching.A grey fox approached and was taken. So why could I not see the coyotes eyes?

Grass Stain,Yes that's what I thought too.He looked to be very healthy and almost a black phase coyote.Normally being blind would  be a handicap but in this case it probably saved his life.I cannot think of any other reason for not seeing eyes.I have had domesticated dogs approach and not see eyes though and I know for a fact they weren't blind. What really convinced me it was a coyote was I made another set up about a half mile away and before I started calling the coyote from the first location was heard barking and howling like he was ticked off.

Foxtrot, four years ago my friend shot a coyote that the eyes didn't glow.we were out in the field and i could see a dark object coming are way.We didn't know it was a coyote till it was at 50 yds.I heard after that ,that if they are sick their eyes don't glow, but it looked healthy. Them coyotes are getting smarter they are wearing sunglasses.

What light were you using and how do you use it?
For a brief moment I could hear nature through all the noise.

The Coyote Guild is just starting to hand out Foster Grant sunglasses to all of it's members!!!

It could have been blind...Figure someone could have given it a load of fine shot in the eyes at one time or another...Once the film comes over their eyes... Coyotes have to start to uses their other senses...

I remember way back when someone shot a coon with only one good eye..That all they saw was the good eye reflecting in the pop covered light... So it does kind of sound like the coyote might have been blind...

I remember when I use to use those cheap cash register head lights I would see only the shadow of the predator and not the eyes... These are the cheap lights that Energizer makes that take two AA batteries that have a few white LEDs and only one or two red LEDS..If that's the light you had on your head it was probably the inadequate light..You did say you saw a fox shortly there after... It could be the angle of approach that the two different animals made if you were using the cheap lights I referenced.

I was using red leds and use it like the picture posted in the d4 season hunt.I don't think he could have approached the calling site and set there without me seeing at least a flicker.I have seen critters blind in one eye but never two.I guess I need to hunt him in daylight.

Some times if the light is not in straight line with your eyes there eyes do not reflect straight back to your eyes and you get no reflection back to yours. I have had people stand right next to me wile i was shinning a light and they could not see eyes. I had to hold the light right beside there head for them to see the eyes reflect back. That is one reason to use a good hat mounted light. It puts the light as close as possible to the center of the shooters eyes making the predators eyes reflect straight back from there eyes to yours. I find it hard to think there is a coyote that is blind in both eyes. But that is just take on the eyes not reflecting eyes.
For a brief moment I could hear nature through all the noise.

Four years ago, what light was being used. Surely not a coyote hat mounted light?

Buckwheat  The light i was using was a nite light coon hunting setup ,but i had a red led replacement bulb so i didn't need a pop cover and it was fairly bright
