Choice of caliber

   Hey guys,I'm thinking of getting a lightweight gun for deer and coyotes,a Kimber 84M Montana.Which caliber would you choose,the .243 or the .260 Rem?

I have had both, the only drawback on the .260 is the choice of bullets, if you don't reload.

Factory ammo would be cheaper for the 243... You know in Cabelas or Basspro, or Wal-Mart they have 3006, 308, 270,  243, and the 3030 Rem, Federal and or Win ammo on the end of the rack... Sometimes for $15.00-$17.00 for a box of 20. However most times that would be with the 100 grain bullet for the 243...That would be for deer not coyotes.....

243, 7mm-08 is a little bit on the higher side with 100 gr. hollowpoints available to reloaders, and .308 150 gr. FMJ would blow right through coyotes without much pelt damage. The 110gr. FMJs for .308 are round nose and are really short length. I love my .308 and my 7mm-08. Don't have a .243... yet. Hopefully getting a .204 Ruger next for the coyotes!

I use a savage model 10 243 and it is a great shooting lightweight varmint gun...
I reloaded it for 70 grain noslers going 3600 feet per second and i've notice from previous experiences on a red fox 430 yds away that it is not to fur friendly. but i can say after it did a couple rolls it didn't get back up

260 got to be good... Figure the 6.5 Swede is one outstanding deer caliber... also the 6.5 BR. I always wanted a 6.5 Swede.  However would opt to get it in a Encore barrel not a military rifle...EABCO does sale custom 6.5 Swedes and 6.5 BR for Encore on the shelf.  Yep .260 AKA .264 aka 6.5 MM's  one heck of a medium big game bullet.

I have heard a few people that owned .260 that sold them...Regret it later that they sold them...

Buy both.....243 and the .260. Get an T/C encore and you can own both barrels and just change them out..
