D6 will be sponsoring a month long statewide coyote hunt.
This hunt will be open to all members of the PPHA.
The hunt will begin at 12:01 a.m. 03/01/13 and run through 03/31/13.
There will be internet check-in with instructions the day before the hunt is to begin.
The rules will be as follows:
* This will be a statewide hunt
* Each participant must post their pics in this thread with designated photo key
* If hunting in teams or groups, only the shooter collects the harvested animal's points.
* All pictures must include the participant displaying their harvest and the official pose. The official pose will be announced before the contest begins.
* Coyotes taken in any other sanctioned PPHA hunt can also be submitted provided they were taken in accordance of all game laws.
* All PGC and game laws must be obeyed and followed during the course of the hunt.
* All participants must be a PPHA member and must remain a member through the course of the hunt.
* No trapping or the use of dogs.
Prizes are to be determined as I'm still putting things together, but you won't be sorry.

Coyotes are much smarter than me unfortunately. However, I am always hopeful to find a somewhat "challenged" coyote that will come out to greet me instead of the usual inhospitable up and down brief head popping over the ridges.

OK...maybe I am a predator hunting addict. Just can't go cold turkey from fox hunting a couple nights a week to nothing. Glad Zekedog is having a March Contest. So the itch got to me and I decided to do some coyote hunting. Calling my hunting partner, Ernie who said..."don't go tonight if you are in the contest...wait until March." Why is he always right...

-
Nice. Congrats. You have any details?
-
Seeking_coyotes
Great!! You have shot it to soon. :-) Lets hear the story.
-
Well, not tons of details but lets see here...
This is my first year with spots with coyotes on a few. I set out to make it a goal to kill one. Kinda like lots of guys do with PA bobcats.
I'm no genius when it comes to hunting but I did learn alot by hard work. What the coyotes taught me this year was 10x more than I read from books, videos, message boards. Enough blabbing.
So it was my last stand of the night and what I figured was the worst spot of the night. About 1:30 A.M. and snow and rain began at 2:00 AM. Not sure if that helped or now. The farm was what experience has taught me is just a hit or miss pass through area. However, I am starting to think that if you call loud coyotes will come in for up to a mile away. A mile to them is like 300 yards to us. Amazing how they can cover ground and climb hills like nothing.
Did the normal calls on my fury...howls, whimpers, etc. Nothing. Dave Dunbar Howler. Nothing. Then did some bunny sounds. Nothing. Then tried grey fox distress which has been more successful for me this year with coyotes than the bunny sounds. Found this out one night hunting with Damian when a coyote came into this sound like it was on fire. Waited about three minutes between calls.
About twenty minutes into the set and these two are headed to my Fury which was off at the time and upwind of them. However, I believe they can peg a sound within a couple feet by triangulating with their ears. Even when very far away. I am a fan of and use misting and feel that it helps.
They were very close at only 120 yards and easy to see in the Carnivore 5 light mounted on my tripod. Shot the first one in the head. It was a male. Second one did not run and was not sure what happened. She looked around trying to make sense of what happened to her man so I opted out of the head shot since her head was moving and put one through her neck. She ran off never to be seen again. Now I am down to only head shots with this caliber.
This is only personal opinion but my .17 Fireball is my favorite gun and caliber...however, my personal opinion based on experience is that it is not enough for coyotes. From what I have seen, if you are not doing a head shot then use enough gun....223 and up. I would have my .243 but it is at the gunsmith and Savage sent the wrong stock for it twice >:(. Going to a .243 and Hornady soft or hollow point 75 grain bullets next year for hogs, deer, coyotes. Maybe some day if I save up I will try out the .223 as a combo fox / coyote gun. I'd rather err on the side of to much gun than to little.
The coyote had a real pretty coat but due to mange it had no tail and most of the hair on its butt was gone as well. While it would have been nice to get a full pelt to tan, I feel better that I was able to take out this one to hopefully stop the spread of mange. Wish I had some gas to burn it as the ground was too frozen to bury it and I would not want other fox/coyotes to suffer and eventually die from this terrible mite infestation. Told the farmer and he said he just wanted me to leave it.
So there is my story. Thank you Jesus, thank you coyotes for the lessons you have taught and will continue to teach me, and Mr. Wilson for a great tripod and light. One thing is certain...coyotes are much smarter than me and IMHO about 10x smarter than even a red fox. Guess that is what makes em so darn fun to chase.
-
Good going seeking! That is your confidence builder for march madness. Just curious what type of bullet was u shooting out of the fireball
-
Nice job man
-
Good job, Mike!
Is that a VX-R I see on that rifle? ;)
-
Ill give it a go.....241
-
Yup sign me up ill be 333
-
Great hunt seeking coyote. I might as well give it a try. Just maybe I can get out and hunt some..... 280
-
Thanks everyone for all of the nice comments!
That was my first "official" coyote. :)
The scope is a VX-6.
My bullet is a Berger 25 grain Match Target. I tried the Varmint version but it was much to explosive for fox. I have some 30 grain Kimber Gold loaded up that I think would be the best coyote option. Unfortunately, I have a turret on my scope set to the 25 grain match bullet and the 30 grain bullets are a good five inches different at 100 yards. :-\

yeah im in, ill be 114

I never called in a coyote in my life, but what the heck, put me in. Nothing to loose but time (away from the old lady!)

Rick, this hunt is judged by number of coyotes, not weight.
Am I correct?
-
The photo key for the 2013 1st annual D6 Statewide PPHA March Madness Coyote Hunt will be a sign that will read: PPHA March Madness Yote Hunt and the date of the kill in a picture along with your coyote.
Guys once again Good Luck to all of you, be safe, hunt hard and above all else have fun!!! Rick
-
Yes it is judged soley on numbers not weight Bob, unless you'd like to run around the state weighing in all the coyotes. ;D
-
Just making it clear because most of the other coyote hunts are by weight
So there is no confusion
-
Greetings from yebiga69. new to predator hunting and got hooked by my buddy zekedogg and leglifter. I am in for the hunt. My number is 610. Good luck to all.

Welcome aboard bud!!!

Once again so everybody see. Good Luck guys. It's going to be hard to beat Leglifter, He's had 6 or 7 yotes tied up for days now!! ;D
-
Rick as you know with leglifter even if they are tied up he will still miss them and hit the rope so they can run away. lol
Good luck to everyone.
-
:'(
-
Leglifter
Yep, it is all over but the crying. ;D
-
I Want to Wish Everyone, Good Luck, Great Health, Good Weather, and a Steady Hand.....
Also a Safe Enjoyable Hunt

Shortmagger
Now that is off to a great start.
-
No fair!! That coyote was tied up , still has the rope on its back feet!!
Congrats!
Looks like YOU don't mess around
Way to get the job done
Story?....
-
Way to go Shortmager ! Putting the pressure on the rest of us early!
-
Way to go brother!!! That is one heck of a way to start us off. You've thrown down the gauntlet,
-
Good job keep it up
-
Great job shortmagger.
Where the heck is the snow? Windy here this morning too and a few inches of CRUNCHY snow.
-
That's awesome short!
-
Way to go! The pressures on now!
-
Cold, snowing, and blowing. Add the 8" of crunchy hard snow, that you break through every time you step. It was a difficult night and nothing to show for the partial coronary. I slept like a baby though.
Congrats, shortmagger.
-
Very nice yote! Tell us the story...
-
(http://imageshack.us/a/img209/7836/img20130302112108.jpg)
This is the coyote from early Saturday morning. Shot with a
22/250. Tested my patience on this one. Came in at the
42 minute mark on female howls. Hopeful about getting out
A few more times.
-
staying for 42 mins cliff would test my patience too. WTG!
-
Thanks for the nice comments, and way to go on your dog, Cliff.
the one I got came in on pup distress after two series of howls, first a lonesome howl, then ten minutes later I played female howl then at the fifteen minute mark I played pup distress,he showed up at 18 minutes,35 lb. male, which is why the rope from hanginging him off the scale is still on his legs, lol
I hit two other spots Friday night/Saturday morning with no success,I usually try to stay on stand at least a half hr to three quarter hr,it was fairly windy with a tough switch at some of the spots but fortunately no snow to deal with like some of you guys have
-
WTG Shortmagger!! Nice yote
-
Abolt
Way to go!!
-
behalf of all us newbie's, I really appreciate explaining the sequence and detail you provided in how you called it. Many members like myself have never even called in a coyote, and your explanation gives some type of knowledge as to how it can be done.
Congrats on the dog, and Much appreciation on the explanation on the set up!!
-
Great Job Cliff! You are amazing. I know you were using the .22-250. What gun / bullet / were you using Shortmagger and how far was the shot? I'm in the market for a coyote gun. Thinking of a .243 Ackley Improved.
-
I use a .221 fireball with 50 grain Dogtown hollow points for coyotes, shot it at 110 yards
-
Way to go, A-bolt. PPHA starting strong.
-
Nice fur on your face cliff!!
-
Way to go a bolt
-
Congrats to the both of you on the yotes!
-
Thanks guys and way to go Nate and hopefully some other members can kill some yotes .Good luck everyone!!
-
Nice work Cliff.
-
some dogs down and i didn't even get to play yet! this afternoon is tip off for me!
-
Looks like some nice coyote scouting snow is headed our way! Hope it lasts for us til the weekend when we can get out after the dogs again.
-
Anybody still chasing the coyotes?
I was able to make it out last night and missed a nice sized furred up yote. He came trotting past me at only fifty yards (down wind side :-( ) and I took a shot at its head just as it went over the swale never to be seen again. :-0 .
Anybody else out there still hunting? Seeing anything? It is wierd...foxes have vanished.
Last night was such a beautiful night...no moon, calm wind, and warm temperatures. Lots of raccoons roaming about enjoying the nice temperature.

This is from Sat. night Mike n I aka foxx were out hunting. Did three set ups. Second setup this one came in at 34 min. Using female coyote vocals. Shot her at approx. 125 yards.
Third set up of the night we had a group going crazy. Couldn't get them to come out of the woods. Maybe some other time. (apparently there weren't any dumb ones in this group) lol
-
Great job Cliff way to hammer those dogs.
-
WTG Cliff! That looks like a nice one.
-
Way to go Cliff !
-
Keep up the great work
-
Way to go killer!!
-
Good job,Cliff,Mike told me you guys had a blast, whackem stackem, dawg!!
-
I was out this weekend and had a great time. I ended up calling in two sets of dogs (4Total). This was my very first time ever calling coyotes. I shot and missed one at 80 yards. After seeing what I shot through, I understood why the miss. I didn't see all the small brush through the scope, but the bullet sure did. Of course it wasn't the shooter!
I started off with a female howel and went to challenge barks. The first set of 2 came in after about 30 minutes. The second set, appeared after the first set of challenge barks! I was amazed at how instatnly they appeared.
Both sets of dogs were called in during the morning hours around 0830.
-
You're definitely " on them " jake
Just a matter of time now
-
Congratulations on getting R done.....ED
-
Keep knocking them down good job

Coyote from last night. Had my cousin out last night, he took me to a few farms. 1st spot of the night, we got this one. 2nd spot nothing, 3rd spot, seen 1 not shots.
Guess we were at the right spot at the right time. Happened to walk in on a pair.
-
Good job a-bolt.
Was out last night hoping to put one on the board. They caught my scent though (I believe) and never commited due to the wind being very gusty and variable wind direction. Will try again next weekend.
-
That's the way to keep hammering them Cliff. Great Job. If you keep this up you may get the unofficial title of " 2012-13 PPHA Coyote King" ;D
-
Looks like you got em figured out cliff
Great job
-
Way to go, Cliff, you're havin an awesome time with those things so far
-

Hahaha, Scottm2012,there's a good chance you're right, and the cool thing about it is,we're about to find out if it is the beard, pretty sure he told me last night that he shaved it off
-
Oh no not the beard! That's like tugging on supermans cape. Some things you should never do.
-
Hahaha, Scottm2012,there's a good chance you're right, and the cool thing about it is,we're about to find out if it is the beard, pretty sure he told me last night that he shaved it off
What!!!! Well, I guess he needs to get another yote, that way we can see what he looks like without one. What to think if his next yote has the mange?
-
Abolt
You are having a good run. I am glad we have you in D2. I thought coyotes were every place but here.
-
We're getting down to the nitty gritty fellas. Time to hit it hard for 1 last week!! Good Luck to everyone... Rick

Thanks for the nice comments, guys,I really appreciate the opportunity to hunt in a hunt like this. I had a lot of fun doing it,also some very frustrating times, it seemed my local coyote population knew I wanted them laying on back of the truck and were very serious about making me look as dumb as possible,I hunted quite a few times and could only get one to cooperate to take a bullet, I saw one other one other than the one I shot but it never gave me a shot, had a couple others talking but they were a no show, thanks also to the sponsors that made the prizes available for the hunt,I'm definitely looking forward to trying out new the new lights
